Bramon Wine Estate

Enrico Route in Plettenberg Bay

Bramon vineyard’s success is based on their award winning Methodé Cap Classique sparkling wine and still wines and has brought many new vineyards to the area. This has given birth to a new wine route – Plettenberg Bay’s Bubbly and Wine Route and it is particularly remarkable as Bramon is the first wine estate so far east of the Western Cape! The family-owned estate has pioneered vineyards in the Plettenberg Bay area.

Peter Thorpe thought that vines could work in the cooler climates of the Plett area. He planted their first vines in 2000 and created a non-traditional bubbly. The dry brut has the delicate characteristics of the Sauvignon Blanc cultivar, the only one produced in the country. The Sauvignon bubbly is as dry as a bone, pale lime in colour with a vibrant mousse, has hints of capsicum, green fig and yeasty flavours with melon aromas. The Bramon MCC ***** has a refreshingly clean palate and a zesty, lingering lime finish and has earned many award.

The Crags ***** (Sauvignon Blanc still) is named after the craggy area, in which the vines are planted. It is an arrestingly fresh and impressive bubbly. It has won a Silver Michelangelo and Gold Vitus Vinifera Award.

Bramon has added a traditional Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc MCC, only one of 2 wines to win a hidden gem in South Africa. It will continue with their very popular Sauvignon Blanc MCC ***** as well as the still Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz Rose****. In an experimental vineyard Bramon tries also Malbec, Sangiovese, Pinotage and other Shiraz varietals. A still Pinot Noir, Merlot and a Rose bubbly are to follow soon.

Since 2010 Bramon Cellar processes the grapes locally, from the press right up to the bottling, for their own wines and additionally for other wine farms in the area. Bramon’s cellar master is Anton Smal from Villiera acclaim. He is very excited by the diversity of flavours attributed to terroir, climate and good old fashioned care. Local is indeed lekker! 073 833 8183

Packwood Wine and Country Estate

Enrico Route in Plettenberg Bay

Packwood Wine and Country Estate nestles between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and offers not only wine but also home-made dairy products. Guests can enjoy an abundance of nature while sampling the white varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay as well as a Methodé Cap Classique, Pinot Noir and Rosé.

Peter and Vicky Gent developed Packwood’s boutique wines already back in 2006. They planted their vines at the highest point of the farm, 330 metres above sea level, in a south easterly direction to optimise on air circulation.

They are working with their wine maker Teddy Hall, a multi-award winning member of the prestigious Cape Wine Makers Guild and carefully select during harvest time the best quality grapes by hand in order to make the finest wines. They are one of the first wine makers to produce wine from this new growing area for South Africa.

2009 – Their maiden vintage Sauvignon Blanc delivered a nose of gooseberry and asparagus, a beautiful mouth feel, full bodied and a lasting taste.

One of South Africa’s top wine aficionados, Jean-Pierre Rossouw (of Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide fame) gives the Packwood Sauvignon Blanc 2009 the thumbs up, saying:

“A very pure wine, with a lovely bright nose of tropical fruit and some lively grassy notes – classic sauvignon in expression. On the palate it is medium in weight and fresh, with very good fruit expression. All in all a great debut!”

2010 – First pinot noir harvest which has been used to produce a Blanc de Noir MCC, made in the traditional way: 12 months in the barrel and a further 12 months in the bottle before de-gorging, this bubbly has been labelled under the Gent family name a milestone achievement.

A note from the winemaker: “No corners were cut in the making of this blanc de noir MCC, the result is a mouth filling roundness and ample fruit intensity, this delicately fine mousse delivers an explosion of bubbles on the palate leading to a crisp refreshing dry finish, it’s the finest Packwood vintage to date – the calibre of wine we dream of making”.

It’s a lifestyle

Redford Lane Wines is a petite wine estate, at the far end of Redford Road in The Crags, 20km east of Plett. It was established in 2006 and owners Leanne and Brendan Lane are managing the vineyard personally. They feel that they gain a much better insight into the intricacies of the winemaking process.

Their wine maker is Anton Smal, a winemaker in The Crags and a resident at Bramon Wine Estate. He has some twenty-odd years at Villiera Wines under his belt – a wealth of invaluable industry experience. Originally from Worcester, Anton grabbed the opportunity to return to the Garden Route to pursue his passion.

Redford Lane Wines is a small, boutique producer with one hectare currently in for MCC production. The philosophy is a simple and passionate one – creating a particularly easy drinking, refreshing white wine soft on the palate, light in colour carrying notes of ripe melon, a hint of pineapple, floral tones, and with a light lime undertone finish. Other varieties include a red blend, white blend and a copper MCC.

Don’t miss this appetising new wine, a testament to Plett’s amazing new winelands. Redford Lane Wines has a tasting room and is open on appointment. +027 83 708 0735

Enrico Route in Plettenberg Bay

With rich farming heritage, Doug and Sue Lund brought their young family to The Crags in 2006, planting new vineyards, building a tasting room & creating inspiring places and spaces.

Their first harvest in 2012 yielded some of the most unblemished grapes any farmer is ever likely to see. Doug and Sue Lund believe that small is special. They know and nurture each vine. They use organic fertilisers and recycled grey water.

The Lunds value quality rather than quantity and go to great lengths to nurture and protect their vines, such as using netting over the vines, which protects them and results in unusually good grapes. As a result the grapes are some of the most unblemished any farmer is ever likely to see.

These top quality grapes are then put to good use by award-winning winemaker, Anton Smal, producing Newstead’s Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as white and pink MCC bubblies.

Enrico Route in Plettenberg Bay

Ingrid and Jon Tonkin came to Plettenberg Bay to pursue a long-cherished dream – a dream to become wine farmers. They selected the Redford area of the Crags because the area was already home to some of the best vineyards in the newly established Plettenberg Bay wine of origin district. It came as an added advantage that the area has similar geographic and climatic characteristics to those, necessary to grow sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and sparkling wine. And above all it is an area of considerable natural beauty.

Ingrid and Jon found a beautiful, fynbos –covered property sitting 250 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Tsitsikamma Forrest. This is close enough to the Indian Ocean to feel the cooling influence of its sea breezes. It helped the decision making that the previous owners had already started to establish a small vineyard on the property with three varieties, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir. However, the attempt had been abandoned long ago and, with the rest of the farm, had been sorely neglected. They bought the farm and named it Lodestone. They chose this name because it conveyed the wonderful feeling that the farm exuded and extraordinary sense of attraction that drew them to it. From 2012 Ingrid and Jon started to turn Lodestone into something special. That work is by no means complete but the results to date show that enough has been done and achieved to suggest that the vision will become a reality. Their final selection will include more sauvignon blanc as well as Semillon and a Rhone-style pinot noir suitable for still wine rather than just bubbly.

Ingrid and Jon planted an olive orchard too, using in the main olive trees transplanted and relocated from Elgin. Alongside the new vineyard are plantings of honey bush tea and king proteas, all within a natural fynbos environment.

Lodestone’s product range includes a sauvignon blanc, a chardonnay, a dry rosé and a red blend to which have been added a brut rosé MCC bubbly and a white Bordeaux blend made from sauvignon blanc and Semillon. These have been vinified by local cellar master Anton Smal and are typical of the cool climate environment in which the grapes are grown. +27 44 534 8015

Enrico Route in Plettenberg Bay

Plettenvale Boutique Vineyard and Winery was started up in 2008 and is now very excited to be part of the new “Wine of Origin Plettenberg Bay Region” that has already been scouted as the future “Champagne District” of South Africa. This is due to both, our attention to detail and care in the vineyard and winery and the cooler climatic conditions here in our region. The climate is excellent for the cultivation of the high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, necessary for the production of Methodé Cap Classic.

The vines are planted on the slopes in northerly direction and thus receive the full advantage of any cool sea breeze directly blowing through the valley from the bay.

Our hand-crafted wines are produced with great care and precision. The Brut Rose MCC is fashioned in the French tradition from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. When it received the award of best Brut Rosé MCC in South Africa 2015 for the Rosé Rocks competition we were thrilled and very happy. The Dry Rosé is produced from the same grapes that are used for the MCC, but has been blended in with some wine made from riper fruit.

The winery and cellar offers visitors a glimpse of wine making on a very personal basis. The wine tasting facility is open to the public by appointment.

In addition Plettenvale Boutique Vineyard and Winery also offer wine and cheese pairing and wine and chocolate pairing by appointment. Plettenvale Wine Estate produces a Chardonnay, Dry Rosé, Brut Rosé MCC and Ruby Rush, their red blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah.
