Hiking

The most famous one is the Otter trail, which is mentioned here more for a matter of completeness. The reason lies in its availability not before June 2018 and the long time, which people typically need to complete it. The trip takes a big chunk out of most people’s holidays and leaves little time for other activities. It should be attempted as a separate holiday.
It is a five-day trail, commencing at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and ends 43 km later at the Groot River estuary at Nature's Valley.

Salt River Lagoon Hiking Trail Picture

Salt River Lagoon

Salt River Mouth Hiking Trail (5 kms, 2 hours) is the perfect balance between coastal bush, river estuary and coastline.
A short walk along the beautiful Nature’s Valley beach takes you to the start of the trail. After a steep climb to the saddle of the hill, a rewarding view over the sea and village below will provide a great photo opportunity.
The saddle will eventually give way to a fairly sharp drop through the coastal bush, down to the Salt River estuary, but the path is well-maintained with log steps. You will emerge at the sandy river estuary.
Walk back along the beach either to the starting point at the shop or to the lagoon and mouth of the Grootrivier.
Some of the special features to look out for on this hike:

  • This trail is very rich in wildlife – watch out for bush pig and bush buck, Cape clawless otter, and white heron, kingfishers and fish eagles.
  • Impressive flora including very old, tall fynbos, 30+ year old Proteas, Candlewood, False Saffron and Keur

Pig's Head Hiking Trail

As you head along the enticing beach at Nature's Valley in an easterly direction, be on the lookout for the rocky outcrop straight ahead which forms the pig's head. If the river mouth is open to the sea, cross the Groot River. Just to the left of the nearby rocks steps lead into the indigenous forest. The trail is signposted but don't be confused by other signs as this is also the spectacular Tsitsikamma Trail. Follow the Pig's Head signs. The distance is approximately 2km return and the difficulty is moderate. It is a short but quite a steep climb to the top.
